This is one of those "misplaced" operations that even though it's licensed to Quincy, the transmitter point is far from the city of license, in fact, this signal in all probability doesn't reach Quincy by at least 30 miles. The transmitter is located around 20 miles southeast of Bowling Green, Missouri. The coverage area also just touches Wentzville, Missouri.
Can someone explain why this is possible?

The Quincy, Illinois-Hannibal, Missouri market is spread out along the Mississippi River, but the signals licensed to the market sometimes struggle to reach the entire market based on the geography along the river. Not all channels will be watchable across the entire area. If you have questions about what you expect to receive, click on the "coverage area" links for each station above. Find your location on the coverage area map(s), and if you are located within the circular coverage area, you'll have a better chance of receiving the station you're seeking. Even from within the coverage area, your reception will depend on your antenna placement and the directionality of your antenna, and the geography of your area.
Once again, as stated above, the WVDM-LD signal at 40.1-5 is difficult to understand.
I'm hoping to add another page to the TV History to include the history of the two far-western Illinois local TV stations to the pages on this site. WGEM-TV is fortunate enough to have attracted the attention of another broadcast historian, Leo T Henning, who wrote a book with the history of WGEM-TV through 2003, the 50th Anniversary of the TV station.
There's no way I would want to duplicate what he has already written, so I will include a link to his book, online as a PDF file and provide it through the website World Radio History, which has been a most important source of historical information that makes this website possible, and the publishing of my book "Pictures on the Prairie: The First Ten Years of Mid-Illinois Television."
